Ephorate Staff

The Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania is a directorate-level regional service of the Ministry of Culture. It is based in Chania and its responsibilities cover Chania and Rethymnon Prefectures. The Ephorate acts in accordance with the Rules of Procedure and the Archaeological Law. It functions within the legal framework of the Greek State.

The main objective of the Ephorate is the protection of monuments. This involves undertaking rescue and systematic excavations, and recording and generally documenting antiquities. Administrative work, connected to the processing of requests by citizens or institutions, is of vital importance in this context. The primary aims of the Ephorate include the creation of protection zones at archaeological sites and their effective operation.

Another important objective is the promotion of archaeological sites and best practice as applied to museums, in order to make them attractions drawing large numbers of visitors. Means of achieving this include temporary exhibitions, educational programmes and cultural events held in museums and on ancient city sites.
