Clay model of boat [Π 50]
This is a terracotta model of an Aegean/Cretan boat type. The find has an elongated tear drop shaped hull (when viewed from above) and a flat bottom. This clay model belongs to the Mitsotakis Collection and comes probably from the Asterousia provenance (prepalatial Tholos cemetery at Moni Odigitria, Southern Crete) from a Burial Context. It is a craft on four feet, placed one at bow and stern, two at amidship. Four projections on the sides were no doubt holders for steering oars. Vertical sides curving slightly inwards at top. Bow rises above gunwale level to point. Stern pointed plat. The bottom of the boat bears 99 cells of “honeycomb type” fitted in eighteen lines. A mast or elements of rigging do not appear.
